This session is made up of two parts, a discussion and a hands-on workshop. In the first part, we will compare corporate and community-run social media, and introduce Mastodon as an example of the latter. In the second part we will invite participants to try out Mastodon together.
The goal of the workshop is to invite discussion on self-organised social media & the relevance for activism. We'll discuss federation vs centralisation in social media and how it translates to socializing and maintaining relationships both online & offline.
We've set up a temporary instance of Mastodon so that we can try things out together. We'll talk about challenges, costs and privacy considerations through our experiences setting up Mastodon.
We want to show that it is possible to run your own instance & how you might go about doing that, e.g. https://post.lurk.org & https://systerserver.town. We want to raise awareness about local technology collectives and the importance of care and dependency.
