A lot of activists do not know a lot about operational security or have insecure practices. This workshop will be a hands-on introduction to device, network and social security, with input, practice and room for discussion.
Activism moving predominantly to an online environment during the COVID-pandemic, new technologies both making us more secure and more vulnerable, recent arrests within Extinction Rebellion and an exploding climate movement: The question of security is more important than ever.
Many younger activists started off in Extinction Rebellion or other groups which did not take operational security serious for a long time. They lack knowledge about why operational security matters, and what to do about it. On the other hand, many older activits are not up to date with technology and have grown slightly paranoid after years of arrests and infiltrators around them.
Both situations are reasonable, the technological environment is changing rapidly, and also the authorities do not just sit around twiddling their thumbs. This workshop is a hands on session to learn more about OPSEC, share and reflect on your knowledge of what is secure and discuss cases. In the end everyone, including the facilitator, will have a better idea of what is safe and what we can do ourselves and with our groups to be safe for each other, so we can be dangerous together!
