Weaving resistance - Amsterdam 2025

A short history of anarchist music

Location Ru Paré

This talk with musical examples is a short journey through the breadth and depth of anarchist music through time and space. From Finland to Zimbabwe and Japan to Spain, from the first political music in ancient Mesopotamia through the musical birth of anarchism between 1798 and 1871 and from the collective singing of tens of thousands of anarchist battle hymns to the intimate living room or cafe songs about the most vulnerable struggling humanity and humans, we'll journey on the soundwaves to explore the richness of the music of our predecessors. We'll dive into why music plays important roles for identities and political movements, how it has represented and shaped anarchist struggles for a better world and how it has changed from more collective democratic production to more individualized consumption while continuing to mobilize.
