Joana Cavaco (Erev Rav)

Joana Cavaco (she/her), a Rotterdam-based activist and educator and currently president of Erev Rav (est. Elul 5783), a Jewish anti-Zionist collective in the Netherlands. Erev Rav is dedicated to building a Jewish community envisioning and practicing a diasporic Jewish existence and solidarity with Palestinian self-determination. The collective has organized several significant events and protests, including the demonstration against the Israeli president's presence at the opening of the Dutch Holocaust museum back in March 2024. These events aim to raise awareness while challenging mainstream narratives about Zionism, occupation, antisemitism, Jewish diasporic existance and culture, genocide and Israel’s control of occupied Palestine. Erev Rav's community-building efforts focus on creating spaces for dialogue, education, and activism amongst Jews who are critical of Israel's actions. They work to foster a sense of Jewish identity aligned with intersectional solidarity principles. Jews don’t need Israel as a home, as they should be able to be at home wherever they exist. Joana, leveraging her background as an experienced community organizer and movement builder, contributes to Erev Rav's intersectional approach, connecting issues of anti-zionist and Palestinian resistance with other social justice movements.
